On CNBC’s "Talking Numbers" segment today, July 8, 2010, with Maria Bartiromo, Kevin O’Brien talks about how similarly sized big pharmaceutical firms are pursuing very different strategies to fill their product pipelines as many of their blockbuster drugs are increasingly going off patent. He discusses how one group is pursuing large multi-product acquisitions, but at the expense of negative year-on-year income growth and lagging returns on invested capital and assets. A second group is pursuing a more deliberate and focused strategic partnership and product acquisition approach, which is leading to better returns, lower risk, and less capital being expended.
